The MLRA rainout in Davenport redirected our path back west to the community of Denison, Iowa. There were multiple story lines going into this evening. The first one is a biggie. Tyler Bruening won the first leg of the SLMR Iowa Challenge. If you win 3, you get a $5,000 bonus. If you win all 4, you get a $20,000 bonus. Yessiree.
The second storyline also involves Bruening. At the SLMR show in Mo-Town, he and leader, Nick Deal, collided causing Deal to spin. Bruening won that show. What if the old phrase, "paybacks are a bitch" come into play with Deal outdueling Bruening for the win? Knocking that $20,000 out of his grasp. Drama was thick as thieves. And it played out EXACTLY LIKE THAT!
Things got jazzed up real quickly when the late models rolled out on this beautiful track for their heat races. In Heat Race #1 it was Ben Schaller coming from 3rd to grab the win over Bill Leighton and Zach Zeitner. Heat 2 saw outside polesitter Jason O'Brien whoop up on his rivals taking the W over Jason Rauen and Andrew Kosiski. Round 3 of the Heat Races brought Nick Deal a victory coming from 6th over Josh Leonard and Kale Kosiski. In the last and final Heat 4, Tyler Bruening won from the pole very handily over Kyle Berck and Ben Sukup.
One B Main was on tap with 17 scheduled starters but 5 of those packed up for the night and were all DNS entries. The top 6 would advance. Those drivers were Allan Hopp victorious over Brett Hopp, Robbie Andersen, Josh Krug, Corey Zeitner, and Blair Nothdurft. Two provisionals were given back row starting spots in the A Main. They were Jason Wallace and Paul Conrad.
Then onto the big finale. It started out with no battle at all for the lead. Nick "the Real" Deal led lap 1 and took off like a bat outta hell. He was gone. Checked out. After the event, I spoke to him. He told me that he went too hard early and used his tires up. That he did. Because he lost a lot of ground. Then he lost the lead.
Back behind Deal, it was a good one with many battles. For the longest time, it was Schaller and Leighton battling tooth and nail for 2nd and 3rd. Back 5-10 car lengths was another good battle with constant changing positions between Tyler Bruening, Josh Leonard, Kyle Berck, Jason Rauen, and a very racy Brad Perdue. Berck got by Leonard and Bruening to move into 3rd from his 8th spot on the starting grid.
Bruening raced wisely saving his tires. He would have made Chargin Charlie happy in those waning laps cranking up the wattage moving from 5th to 1st. That $20,000 bonus was flashing in his head! Coming off 2 like a caged animal, The "Real Deal" caught Bruening. It was out of my vision. But Bruening tells me that he got body slammed. He drove to his pit stall with a flat left rear. Deal says, "It was just a racing DEAL". No tongue in cheek intended. Sports need good rivalries to fill the stands. We certainly have one going on between these two. Even though they won't admit it.
Deal wins and Bruening limps across in the runner-up spot with a hard charging Leighton in 3rd.

HOLY SHAMOLEY! IT'S A BOBBY DAZZLER KINDA NIGHT!!!
PSYCHOPEDIA RECAP ON WHAT WENT DOWN
By: Psycho Billy
May 2, 2019
Hoker Trucking Breaker 19 Convoy to IA/IL
MLRA Spectacular
Stuart Speedway (Stuart, IA)
On this brisk, calm Iowa evening, we witnessed a BOBBY DAZZLER. Pierce set fire to the cushion coming from 13th and is the triumphant one pulling into victory lane for photos and interview!
#CurseOfOakIsland
With 24 cars in the house, that led to 3 heat races with no B Main. Everyone would make the show. Except Spencer Diercks who packed up and headed home shortly after hot laps. We will try and get that story. Joe Gorby opted out of that same heat race.
Heat 1 had Will "the Thrill" Vaught taking the win from the pole over Chris Simpson and Andrew Kosiski. In Heat 2 it was outside polesitter Tyler Bruening who easily wheeled to victory over Jordan Yaggy and "Dirt Ripper" Jake Neal. Payton Looney turned on the turbos in Heat Race 3 impressively getting by Jeremy Grady and then Chad Holladay to take the win. Grady got by Holladay late in the heat taking 2nd.
It got a little chilly during intermission. But once the A Main went 4 wide to salute the fans, that all changed. Front row starters were heat winners, Payton Looney and Tyler Bruening. Looney darted to the point as the green cloth flew high, wide, and handsome. He led in the early going until Bruening hunkered down and set sail. It surely looked like his race to lose as he built a decent lead. There were a fair number of cautions. And even a red flag.
I had a chance to visit with Jake Neal, who was the cause of that red flag. Jake told me, "I don't know what hit me. But broke my helmet and shield and I think broke my nose! Can’t breath through it and it was bleeding pretty good". Get well wishes are welcome as tomorrow's off day for the MLRA will come in handy for this young gun.
Meanwhile, back in turn 1 where I was stationed during the A Main, there was a fella who started way back in 13th. He is a driver that 1) knows how to take advantage of cautions, knows how to take advantage of no cautions, loves bullrings and may have even been born on one, and definitely thrilled the crowd going high, wide, and handsome just like the Tall Cool One. You got it. Bobby Pierce set fire to Stuart Speedway.
He along with Chad Simpson and Mitch McGrath were Psycho's Movers and Shakers. This doesn't happen very often, but all 3 drivers advanced 12 markers. Pierce started 13th while Simpson rallied from 19th to finish 7th and McGrath came all the way from 20th to place 8th.
Pierce wins followed by 4th starting Chris Simpson and 2nd starting Tyler Bruening who all stood on the podium. It was a spectacular show. This could be Iowa's version of FALS. It's in a small community with a small grandstand. But man, what a helluva racetrack. We will be back for SLMR action the day before the Dirt Late Model Dream!

PSYCHOPEDIA RECAP ON WHAT WENT DOWN
April 6, 2019 ••• Illini 100 Night 2
Farmer City Raceway (Farmer City, IL)
Sanctioned by: World of Outlaws Late Model Series
Coverage presented by: Dewey's Drive-In
By: Psycho Billy
Well over a thousand plus fans watched the night unfold. They heard a sound in the sky. Me too. A peace settled throughout my body. I looked upward to see what caught the attention of the fans and could vaguely see the outline of geese, honking and flying north. They were streamlined. One goose led while all others flew in the wake of his lead.
The roar of the engines made everyone turn their heads back downward. I paused to let the moment of the checkered flag set in. A winner has emerged. Then I began to write this report as the driver climbed out of his car and knelt before the champion's throne. Brandon Sheppard has just won the 2nd most important race in the state of Illinois, the World of Outlaws sanctioned Illini 100!!!
This beautiful evening went into full-on mode when the super lates fired up for Time Trials. Last evening Brandon Sheppard laid waste to Moyer's previous track record with an ever-so-cool 11.750 in Group A. Tonight's quick time in Group A was Tanner English with a 12.283. That ended up being best time of the night. Group B saw Dennis Erb Jr clock in at 12.411.
There were 4 heats. Top 3 in Heat 1 were Tanner English, Billy Moyer, and Bob Gardner. Heat 2 was Brandon Sheppard, Scott Schmitt, and Shane Clanton. Heat 3 was Ricky Weiss, Dennis Erb Jr, and Scott James. The 4th and final heat was Frank Heckenast Jr, Jimmy Mars, and Kevin Weaver.
There were 2 B Mains. In the first, it was Shannon Babb, Darrell Lanigan, and Brian Shirley advancing. In B Main #2, moving on up was Ryan Unzicker, Kent Robinson, and Allen Weisser.
That brought us to the finale. One of the highest paying single day races in the continental U.S.. It was a war of attrition. The rain. Those darn Thursday rains left the track very "spongy". It led to many, many cautions.
But this was a big show. And the players that wanted to play, came out. B Shepp has been so solid all year. English and Weiss were front runners early on. James, Mars, and Pierce kept plugging away and eventually joined the show.
That nasty 7 car pile-up in the late going was horrid. I personally didn't see what went awry. I just saw some very upset, very dejected drivers who were contenders. Tacky tracks can lead to this. But the show must go on. It was a really great weekend with a tremendous crowd. Dirt late model racing is doing really well.
