It is always pure pleasure coming to both Quincy Raceways and Quincy, Illinois. Maybe just for my Concession Stand Review. But we'll keep that between you and me. I've loved their food ever since my very first visit. If they would have had 40 cars, I would have had time to eat more! The rain stayed away. But it's now sprinkling as I'm in paragraph 2. No Time Trials were held. Just 2 heat races and a 25 lap Main Event. This was their Season Opener. They had to do some serious work to the track. And wanted to make sure things were A-OK before anything huge was brought in. There were some big crashes on both sides of the track. But nothing in relation to the dirt work that was done. I thought everything ran smoothly. The racing was great. One needs crashes and drama for entertainment value. The crowd was pretty darn good. Many people gave me a shout out. It's been a while. So that felt nice.
Heat 1 went to Darin Weisinger Jr over Austin Becerra and Spencer Havermale. Heat 2 saw Jason Perry take top honors ahead of Jamie Wilson and Jackson Frankel.
After the heats, I did my Concession Stand Review. I was proud to give them 10 out of 5 stars. I was just being kind of silly. But that's how good their racetrack food is. Some tracks the food is kinda rat worthy. But theirs is top tier restaurant worthy.
Then I quickly tallied up the Best Appearing Car totals. We had 11 guest judges. Ten of them submitted their ballots. The winner won by 3 points. Sometimes when the last ballot comes in, it complicates things more. Then we need to go to a tiebreaker. But everyone was given a second warning to vote ASAP. The outcome was final. Jake Griffin in the 79 car was the winner. It wasn't quite as fun as last night. One race team got rather upset that I didn't nominate them. Here are the rules. Put on a brand-new wrap for the fans. Million-dollar, Mona Lisa worthy with no tire rubs etc. This is a BEST APPEARING CAR COMPETITION. If you didn't put on a brand-new wrap for Quincy's first race of the season, that might be one reason. If you have any black marks on your car, that would obviously be another reason. Sometimes with small car counts or 30 days on the Hell Tour, we'll let little scratches slide. Maybe an entire side of a car, if every car looks horrible. That's the protocol to get nominated. One of our reporters told me to forget having it this year because it's a hassle dealing with scuffed up cars in the Best Appearing Car of the Year Competition. It's our last year in business; I rejected that idea.
The Main Event was pretty good. Lots of passing. The track was F-I-N-E. I talked with Denny Woodworth afterwards. I thought for sure with the speed and power in which he took the lead from Spencer Havermale on lap 7, I thought for sure he would bank the check tonight. But on lap 17, Austen Becerra swiftly drove by ole DW and literally checked out a few laps later. Woodworth must have lost some of his gusto. He relinquished another spot back to Havermale just 2 laps later on the 19th go round. That's how they finished: Becerra-Havermale-Woodworth. Passing, crashes, and lots of smiling faces of people just plain ol' happy to be back at Quincy Raceways.
