Thanks to Jim at Dewey's Drive-In for "persuading" us into providing a bit of limited coverage of the 19th Annual Illini 100 race weekend. After a handful of practice sessions last night, everyone's juices were flowing coming into night 1 here at Farmer City Raceway. Tomorrow may be the big 25k finale. But everyone who lives around these parts KNOWS that FCR is best known for "Friday Night Lights!"
Qualifying was pure fire.This joint is fasssssst. Times in the 12 second bracket are commonplace. Woo points leader Bobby Pierce barely inched Devin Moran. If it were a race, I dont think a photo finish camera could have separated and determined the outcome. Pierce nipped Moran by .002 with a 12.529. But overall quick time of the night would come out of Group B. Brandon Sheppard found the track to speed up and found it to his liking as the Rocket1 house car crew and team wanted to be present although they are running for LOLMDS points. B Shepp punched out a 12.458 a good 1/10th ahead of Nick Hoffman.
Heat 1 would go to Pierce over Ryan Unzicker, Timmy Dick, & Ethan Dotson. Heat 2 saw Moran outduel Tim McCreadie, Tristan Chamberlain, & Josh Rice. Heat 3 followed suit with polesitter Sheppard taking Trey Mills, Daulton Wilson, & Frank Heckenast Jr. Heat 4 also saw polesitter Hoffman take the win over Drake Troutman, Jason Feger, & Dennis Erb Jr.
Two B Mains were next on tap. B Main #1 for the first time tonight saw someone defeat the polesitter. Outside polesitter Ryan Gustin rolled on easily to capture the checkers ahead of Kyle Bronson & Dustin Sorensen. B Main #2 saw two drivers outside of the top 3 make the dance. Dan Ebert looked large and in charge out front tonight. But behind it got racy as Tyler Erb & Brian Shirley shot the gap each advancing 2 spots to get in. Three provisionals were used tonight. The recipients were Logan Zarin, Brent Larson, and Eli Johnson.
The $12,000 to win Main Event was up next. These cats were set to run 40 laps in this prelude to the granddaddy. To make a long story short LOLMDS journeyman, Brandon Sheppard swept the night setting quick time, winning his heat, winning the A Main, and if that wasn't enough for the defending Illini 100 champ, he led all 40 laps. #totaldomination
Behind Sheppy, well. There was a damn fine race going on. Goes to show, don't just watch the leader. Even if you're a devout B Shepp fan!
Bobby Pierce was 3rd on lap 1 and 2nd all the way thru lap 31. He was involved in a wreck and pitted. But drove hard rallying back into the number 7 slot.
Nick Hoffman ran 2nd on the opening circuit before Pierce squirted by pushing him back into 3rd where he rode for the bulk of the next 39 laps.
Tim McCreadie was hanging around 6th and 7th all the way thru lap 23. Then he started to move forward. When Pierce crashed and the caution flew, he jumped by Hoffman into 2nd. Hoffman regained 2nd briefly before T Mac took charge and finished runner-up.
Tyler Erb was tonight's Mover & Shaker 20th to 10th. Psycho's Drop the Anchor Award goes to Devin Moran 3rd to 22nd.
