Having been a fan of the sport traveling the Midwest to Late Model specials throughout the 80's, 90's, and 00's, and then becoming a sports reporter in the 10's and 20's, I've been to hundreds of racetracks. When days like this occur, a first-time visit to Valley Speedway was fun and refreshing. The track promoter, Dennis, is kind of like me. A Mr. do it all. He was watering the track when I arrived. That was about the only spare time that I had to possibly meet him. Except when I went grandstand side to meet up with a race fan and grab a quick Cheeseburger and Mountain Dew. And then it was just about time to head to the infield to get situated for the Heat races. So, I didn't get to meet up with him.
But I did meet up with Kyle, Brooke, and Glen from 4 State Dirt Late Model Series. Great people. Great supporters. Got a #PsychoSelfie taken with the first two. Glen was racing and working on his car when I went by. We chatted briefly. But I didn't want to bug him for a picture. He backed into the wall in a nasty crash that ended his night trying to avoid a spinning car. It must be tough to bite your tongue in situations like this when you own the series. It's nice to see him racing and supporting it. We were chatting about his Ironman status on just how many different traveling series he competed in last year alone. I should have written it down. I ran out of fingers. Lol.
We had a field of 18 4SDLMS cars run tonight. They ran Time Trials, 3 Heats, and the Main Event. I'm personally a big fan of 3 heats versus 2. It leaves more to wonder about for the fan base. Some folks with the bigger series just don't understand this. Doing it this way, the fans will look at it as: there were 3 heat winners that coukd win. Versus 2. Or maybe 6 that could win if you go top 2. Versus 4. When everybody runs together in the heat, it's like, well we already know the outcome of the feature.
I was chatting with the local track photog in the infield during the Main Event. Neither of us could believe it when Brandon Baldridge drove right on by the defending points champion, Sawyer Crigler to take the lead. Sometimes when this happens, the young gun fades, and the champ (or veteran) will get that momentum back later in the race when things start to change a bit. But not tonight. These two teammates finished 1-2 with Baldridge-Crigler and Dustin Tiger stepping onto that final podium spot.
On to Quincy Raceways tomorrow night!
